With the recent 2009 PRINCE2 update to make it a practice that is more generic than purely IT based, some questions have been raised. A significant part of the user group is still IT, thus practitioners want to know how compatible the new version is to Agile software. The reason for this is that the adoption of Agile has become widely used and is now considered mainstream. What has come to light is that the new version does not directly mention Agile, but the changes definitely lean towards Agile. Agile practices are definitely being accommodated although the new version provides a more general purpose body of reference. What is noticeable though is that the move is towards accommodating Agile practices, there is very little guidance in making the right process definition choices.
New principles introduced to Prince2 Course
The 2009 version of PRINCE2 introduced the principles of ‘continued business justification’; justifications at project start, tracking to justification of changes with thorough documentation. The move is away from blindly following the manual and towards learning from experience. This is a definite move to Agile traditions with its continuous improvement and retrospective practices.
In general the 2009 version has been streamlined with far fewer themes, sub-processes and management products. Instead of one there is now two manuals; one for directors governing the project and one for implementation project managers.
In the previous 2005 version of PRINCE2 was incompatible with the evolving requirements issues of Agile practices. This made it impossible for many public sector projects to consider Agile projects as they followed PRINCE 2. This caused great controversy for often the requirements were not known at the start of a project or would change during its course. In his Vodcast, the lead author of PRINCE2, 2009 mentioned that this incompatibility issue has been addressed in the new version. Ovum feels a clearer identification of this question and resolution is needed as they find very little evidence of a resolution in the 2009 material.
IT industry entitled to own good practices PM
Ovum argues that PRINCE2, 2009 lacks the vital process definitions needed by the IT industry although it contains all the right ingredients. Ovum feels that because PRINCE 2 2009 is less prescriptive it leaves users that lack sufficient process knowledge, without support. They feel that this lack of vital definitions could result in project failure instead of project success. It is felt that 2009 users should look to DSDM Agile practices for knowledge and the help they need.
Overall Ovum feels that although PRINCE2, 2009 is a useful reference, it is lacking for the IT industry and the needs they have with Agile practices. It is felt though that as Agile has become mainstream, the IT community will provide the knowledge needed to bridge the gap between PRINCE2 and Agile.
